About

Beyond the Cycle aims to trace the iGEM Project beyond the competition and identify the challenges often faced by iGEMers while continuing them after the competition is over. We envision supporting the projects by providing them with resources and mentorship. The series will consist of live sessions on the iGEM Video Universe. More information about the session topics will be available soon.

Description

We will be tracing the past iGEM projects and identify the teams which successfully continued their projects after the competition. We will share their stories and the obstacles they overcame so that you can get an insight into their success. We also plan to set up a mentors group, and develop resources and tools for the teams interested in continuing their projects beyond the competition. We hope to help more teams realize their project's true potential and create an impact. Our project will lead to more curation of publishable work and enable iGEM projects to transform into startups.

Plan

Surveys

  • Trace the past iGEM projects and identify the successful ones who continued their projects after the competition so that we could share their stories to motivate a wider audience. Also, we would reach out to these teams to mentor the current teams to achieve the same.

  • Learn about the challenges iGEMers face in continuing their projects beyond the competition, especially publishing their research. Also, in this regard, we can get support from the previous work done by Startups Program on mapping the obstacles of turning an iGEM project into a business.

Blogs

Create blogs to motivate our target audience by sharing the stories of successful teams publishing their work or starting a business and how they overcame the obstacles in their way. This should also benefit a lot from our existing Phoenix Database.

Mentorship

  • Set up a closely associated group of mentors who successfully continued their iGEM projects with the ones who want to achieve the same.
  • Organize regular Q&A sessions chaired by mentors to provide you the guidance and support to realize your project’s potential.
