Through such efforts we want to continue our commitment to continued education of iGEMers after the competition by providing them an opportunity to publish their scientific research in a peer-reviewed journal filled entirely with iGEM Projects!
About
“In its current format, iGEM aims to improve societal aspects relevant to local communities, and thus encourages young researchers all around the world to identify and tackle challenges critical to their region with practical synthetic biological devices and technologies.”
In 2021, we announced a special issue of the Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology journal on The 2019 and 2020 iGEM Proceedings ↗. A special thank you 💚 to our collaborators KeAi Publishing ↗ for creating this opportunity for iGEMers to publish their iGEM projects in their journal, and Bluepha ↗ for sponsoring the Article Processing Charges (APCs) for iGEM teams.

Through this collaboration, 12 iGEM Teams from the 2019 and 2020 iGEM Competition published their work and showcased how synthetic biology can advance the field through applications in bio-sensing and therapeutics to bioremediation and the development of novel and stable bio-materials. These projects ranged from creating drug delivery platforms for targeted recognition of cell membrane receptors in breast cancer patients, constructing toehold switches and microRNA based detection circuits for cervical cancer to protein-based fire retardants, degradation of perfluorinated compounds (PFC) by engineering of PFC-degrading enzymes and much more! Take a look at all the published papers available for open access below:
