The Academy of Scientific Research, in collaboration with Synchrony and the Specialized Federation of Scientific Research NGOs, hosted the inaugural "Egyptian Synthetic Biology Day."
- Event Date: November 5th, 2024
- iGEM Representative: Mahmoud AbdelGawad, iGEM Ambassador to Africa
The event marked a significant milestone in advancing synthetic biology in Egypt, bringing together researchers, academics, and industry professionals to discuss the latest developments and future opportunities in this rapidly evolving field. The seminar aimed to raise awareness about synthetic biology as an emerging solution to many contemporary challenges. It featured multiple sessions designed to highlight the potential applications of synthetic biology across various fields of modern science.

The event began with an introductory session by Mahmoud, who delivered an engaging presentation on the iGEM Competition while detailing the journey of the Synchrony team, and emphasizing how the experience honed their skills in the field. He also elaborated on the various aspects of participating in iGEM, including the iGEM Community, the Startup Showcase, and the steps involved in forming a team to compete.
Subsequent sessions led by the Synchrony team focused on increasing awareness of synthetic biology applications and practical approaches to exploring this exciting field. Some of the topics covered using bioinformatics tools, understanding BioBricks and genetic circuits, and applying mathematical modeling to analyze interactions within synthetic biology systems.

The event concluded with a session on biosafety and biosecurity, presented by Yorgo El Moubayed (Program Coordinator at iGEM). His talk clarified the distinctions between the two fields and outlined best practices for implementing these measures to prevent unintended incidents in synthetic biology research and applications.
