The Australasian SynBio Competition is held as a local competition within Australia to showcase the synthetic biology community talents in university project teams.

  • Event Date: September 30th, 2023
  • iGEM Representatives: Cindy Sia, iGEM Ambassador to Asia & Oceania and Abigail Sison, Director of Communications (iGEM Foundation)

A career panel was set to inform and educate students and early career graduates to where they could head in the ecosystem. It was a great event to strengthen collaboration and community for not only the synthetic biology ecosystem but in Science.

Joe Brock and Brendan Kidd hosted the iGEM Ambassador, Cindy and Director of Communications, Abigail, to the Australasian SynBio Competition event in Canberra, ACT.

  • We got a special shout out from the event organizers and many of the participating university teams were keen on joining the iGEM Competition next year! Cindy is working on a proposal for Leagues and also for submission to the Australian Government for support and investment.
  • Cindy has been working for the past few months with Matt (Melb Uni), Joe and Brendan (ANU) to get it all sorted.
  • She will be heading to Wellington, New Zealand, on October 15th-17th to establish connections and relationships and get everyone from both Australia and NZ on a call so we can all be aligned to how the synthetic biology community/economy should look like and what the next steps will be.
