The 3rd Bioengineering Day was organized by the Department of Bioengineering at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM). The event brought together students, researchers, and industry professionals to explore advancements in bioengineering and biotechnology.
- Event Date: January 27th, 2025
- Event Location: Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
- iGEM Representative(s): Amr Gouda, iGEM Ambassador to Africa
The event featured exhibition sessions and booths from leading medical and scientific companies, including IRC-Biosystems and Machines, Sedra Limited Company, MediServ Co. Ltd., Philips, and the National Water Company (NWC). These exhibitors showcased innovations in bioinformatics and related fields, sparking interest and engagement among attendees.
During the event, Amr met with the KFUPM iGEM team, along with their professors and advisors, to discuss the challenges they faced and their plans for the upcoming competition. The team shared that delays in customs had disrupted their wetlab work, as essential parts had not yet arrived. Despite these setbacks, they confirmed their participation in iGEM this year with new members, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to progress.

A key highlight of the day was the presentation by the 2024 KFUPM Saudi iGEM team ↗. Their session provided an introduction to synthetic biology, iGEM’s mission, competition criteria, and their project’s journey, and a new avenue for students to consider along with internships and their undergrad projects. As the first Saudi iGEM team, their efforts reflected the growing influence of the iGEM Competition and synthetic biology in the region.
Lastly, the event highlighted KFUPM’s bioengineering community and their commitment for advancing synthetic biology in Saudi Arabia.
