The 34th Annual Queenstown Molecular Biology Meeting (QMB), focused on “Technologies for a Changing World,” featured a Synthetic Biology Satellite organized by SynBioNZ, the New Zealand node of Synthetic Biology Australasia (SBA).
- Event Date: September 4th-5th, 2024
- iGEM Representative: Anna Donnan, iGEM Ambassador to Asia & Oceania
The satellite was convened by Dr. Essie Van Zuylen and Dr. Danielle Kok from the University of Canterbury. This event brought together leading researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and other stakeholders to discuss the latest advancements in synthetic biology, GMO legislation, and support for iGEM in the Southern Hemisphere. The Synthetic Biology Satellite included oral and poster presentations covering topics such as healthcare, primary industries, the environment, and biosecurity, attracting participation from a diverse group of attendees.
Anna gave a talk on assembling an iGEM team, hosted a presentation by an iGEM student, and participated in a panel discussion on the importance of iGEM, alongside notable figures like Louise Brown from HygGEne Renewables.

The attendees at the Synthetic Biology Satellite during the event were primarily academic faculty and industry professionals. Key representatives from academic institutions such as the University of Canterbury, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington, and the University of Auckland were present. Industry professionals, including Alec Foster from Scion and members of HygGEne Renewables, also attended. Additionally, government science representatives like Emily Parker, a science advisor from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), were in attendance. Although a few students were present, the majority of participants were professionals focused on advancing synthetic biology through high-level discussions and collaborations.
The iGEM session at the Synthetic Biology Satellite event was a great success. The panel discussion sparked engaging conversations, with a lot of interest from the audience. After the session, Anna had meaningful discussions with several potential PIs from institutions that do not currently host iGEM teams, and is now following up with them. Much of the interest also came from postgraduate students eager to support teams as instructors.
