Description

Objective

The iGEM MUN is tailored for individuals seeking to expand their understanding of diplomacy and contribute to the advancement of governance in synthetic biology.

Context: The rapid progress in Synthetic Biology has captured the attention of global governance bodies, including the United Nations. Notably, Synthetic Biology and Genetic Engineering have emerged as focal points in discussions at high-level meetings such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP meetings. Despite the importance of these gatherings, there's a noticeable absence of natural scientists, who are integral to these scientific processes, from participating in policy-making discussions.

Rationale: There's an evident need for scientific representation in policy-making discussions concerning Synthetic Biology. The iGEM MUN project aims to address this gap by providing scientists, particularly youth and young researchers, with a platform to engage in global policy dialogues. Through participation in the Model United Nations focused on science and Synthetic Biology, participants can gain valuable insights into policy formulation processes and contribute their expertise to shaping governance frameworks.

Impact: The iGEM MUN initiative offers participants a unique opportunity to delve into the intersection of science and diplomacy. By conducting research, exploring policy perspectives, and actively participating in MUN simulations, scientists can deepen their understanding of global policy issues related to Synthetic Biology. Furthermore, this experience may inspire participants $to pursue careers in science policy, ultimately fostering a new generation of advocates and experts in the field.
