Along with fellow SynBioNZ committee members Dr. Amy Yewdall, Dr. Roseanna Cameron, and Jessica Chiang, we hosted an iGEM Information Session via Zoom for prospective Principal Investigators (PIs) in the region.
- Event Date: April 18th, 2024
- iGEM Representative: Anna Donnan, iGEM Ambassador to Asia & Oceania
The session highlighted the benefits of hosting iGEM, not only for PIs and students but also for the broader New Zealand bioeconomy. The webinar emphasized how iGEM can drive interdisciplinary collaboration, skill development, and innovation while aligning with national bioeconomic goals. Additionally, it showcased the infrastructure being developed at the University of Canterbury to facilitate hosting iGEM within a structured framework as part of an accredited module system.
The session also demonstrated how SynBioNZ could support and assist in the process of setting up teams, specifically addressing PIs at various New Zealand institutions, and illustrating how they could benefit from this opportunity while contributing to the advancement of synthetic biology in the region. Overall, the webinar aimed to inform and inspire participation in the iGEM Competition across New Zealand's academic landscape, encouraging collaboration between institutions and highlighting the importance of synthetic biology in addressing local and global challenges.
The iGEM information webinar successfully engaged prospective PIs and showcased the advantages of hosting iGEM. Although there was at least one participant from each target institution, overall participation was lower than anticipated.

Anna Donnan, iGEM Ambassador to Asia & Oceania
“The event confirmed that a key challenge in establishing iGEM teams in New Zealand is the limited number of willing PIs. Despite this, the webinar succeeded in raising awareness of iGEM and its potential impact.”
