The iGEM Ambassador to Europe, Yassin Somoue Chafik, recently delivered a talk at the Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) in Morocco.

  • Event Date: July 12th & 15th, 2024
  • iGEM Representative: Yassin Somoue Chafik, iGEM Ambassador to Europe

“The UCA, created in 1978, has continued to evolve and confirm its positioning at the national and international level, both through the growth of its student body and through the diversification of its training offering, as well as through research and national and international influence.” - https://www.uca.ma/fr ↗

Next year, Yassin will present a symposium on synthetic biology applied to neuroscience at the university's Neuroscience Congress. Since they were unfamiliar with synthetic biology, he saw this as an opportunity to share knowledge and promote synthetic biology and iGEM throughout North Africa. This is particularly exciting in a country where he has connections and where synthetic biology is still developing.

His objectives were to discuss iGEM, explain the principles of synthetic biology, and demonstrate how it can address global challenges in health, education, and the environment. Yassin has just begun to gain traction; they haven't yet planned anything related to prospective teams or sponsors.

“Over the course of this engagement, I initiated communication and established contacts from this university and the University of Beni Mellal who are interested in furthering the message.”
